The HSE ACOP L8 Guidance note HSG74 part 1 clearly states in paragraph 1.83
‘Effective water treatment will slow the rate of fouling but will not completely eliminate it or prevent fouling caused by airborne contamination. It is therefore necessary to inspect parts of the cooling tower system regularly to determine the cleanliness, need for cleaning and type of cleaning process required. Provision should be made to allow access to these parts safely’.
It is clearly stated therefore that safe access to the vaious parts of the cooling tower is of fundamental importance.
Cooling tower are occasionally provided with full access capability but this is not the norm, and especially on older towers, access to the higher levels often requires scaffolding or elevated platforms just to carry out routine inspections as part of the maintenance programme.
Premier (C&D) offer bespoke cooling tower platforms and railings to conform with any regulatory requirements.
